The Champions League is the pinnacle in the world of club football, which means that it is the honour that all elite clubs want to win. That honour fell to Bayern Munich last season, as they won the Champions League final against Paris-Saint Germain back in July. Their achievement was a memorable one, as it capped a treble for the German giants.

Their path to the final was a difficult one, as they needed to overcome Chelsea, Barcelona and Lyon in the knockout rounds. But, is there time as European champions going to be a short-lived affair? These are some of the teams that could be best placed to challenge them for their honour in the Champions League this season?

Liverpool

Bayern Munich made a gamble that you would be more likely to see on LeoVegas India over the pre-season, as they made the decision to sell Thiago Alcantra to Liverpool. That decision could come back to bite them this season, as the Reds appear to be the side that are best placed to challenge for their Champions League trophy. Jurgen Klopp’s side ended their 30-year wait for a top-flight title last season, as they left Manchester City trailing in their dust.

Liverpool went on to win the Premier League by an astonishing 18-points. However, Klopp will likely have the ambition to win both the Premier League and Champions League this season. Liverpool certainly have the squad to do that, as they boast players such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who both scored over 20 goals last season. Defensively, there are very few teams better in world football, and the additions of Thiago and Diogo Jota will ensure that they are competitive again in Europe this season.

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will also be among the favourites to win the Champions League this season. The Citizens came up short again last season, as they were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage for the third year running. Many believed that City would get through to at least the semi-finals when the draw was made, but they were ultimately knocked out by Lyon.

There is no doubting City’s abilities going forward, as they have scored at least 100 goals in each of the past three seasons. However, the questions surrounding their defensive abilities have persisted. Ultimately, it was their defensive record last season that meant that they couldn’t get closer to Liverpool, and that could once again be their issue when it comes to winning the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain

The target for PSG since the arrival of Qatar Sports Investments has been to win the Champions League. However, that target has still not been achieved in the eleven years that the new owners have been in place. They have never been closer than they were last season, as they fell at the final hurdle against Bayern Munich.

Their target this season will be to go one better, and they will be boosted by the fact that the majority of that runners-up squad is still in place. However, the club have lost the leader in defence over the pre-season, as Thiago Silva ended his eight-year stay with the club. Marquinhos is believed to be the rightful heir to his compatriot’s throne, but it will be interesting to see whether they can reach the same heights that they did in the 2019-20 season.
