West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar Meets Union Home Minister Amit Shah for Second Time in Two Days

Kolkata, June 19: On a day when the Calcutta High Court snubbed the West Bengal authorities for its ‘inaction’ over the post-poll violence in the state, Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the nationwide capital on Saturday for the second time in 48 hours.

Dhankhar, who has been essential of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and West Bengal authorities over its ‘failure’ to comprise post-poll violence in the state, stated, “In Delhi I spoke to some people. We cannot compromise on democracy; we cannot compromise on rule of law and we cannot compromise with the Constitution. “I want everyone to rise to the occasion and try to wipe the tears of those families and people who have to leave their houses, whose near and dear ones have been killed, injured, whose houses have been subjected to arson and loot. We cannot survive in a democracy if people have to pay extortion fees to run their small business,” Dhankhar stated after his second assembly with Shah on the latter’s residence on Saturday.

His assembly with Shah got here at a time when Banerjee and Dhankhar have been on the loggerheads over a variety of points. Over the previous few weeks, Dhankhar has raised issues over the alleged incidents of political violence in West Bengal.

Dhankhar had despatched a report on the violence to the Centre quickly after the Bengal polls. Before his Delhi go to, he had slammed Banerjee over her dealing with of the violence.

On its half, the state authorities stated that the post-poll violence was “somewhat unabated” when the Election Commission was in cost of legislation and order in Bengal, including that the cupboard restored order as soon as the oath ceremony was over.

During his journey to the nationwide capital, Dhankar, 70, additionally met President Ram Nath Kovind and Union ministers Prahlad Joshi and Pralhad Singh Patel, in addition to calling on senior Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

The Trinamool Congress was fast to react to Dhankhar’s conferences in the nationwide capital. In a press convention, senior Trinamool chief and MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy stated, “There is absolute peace and law and order in the state. In spite of that, one who is complaining is doing this with an ulterior motive and it has got a political intention.”

“For this reason, he (Dhankhar) is roaming about in Delhi for the last five days so that he can present a wrong picture of West Bengal and its people. But the people of Bengal will never accept this intentional propaganda to show the state in a poor light in front of the country,” he added.

Earlier on Saturday morning, the Calcutta High Court criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led authorities, saying that the state didn’t take any concrete steps to deal with the complaints pertaining to post-poll violence.

“In a case where the allegation is that life and property of the residents of the state are in danger on account of alleged post-poll violence, the state cannot be allowed to proceed in the manner it likes. The complaints required immediate action… It is the duty of the state to maintain law and order and inspire confidence in the residents of the state,” the excessive court docket noticed.
