While Tushar Deshpande’s 2023 IPL season looked quite promising as he scalped 10 wickets in the tournament, the thing he will be most remembered by, is the fact that he earned the distinction of being the first ever impact player of the IPL. The Impact Player was introduced in the 2023 edition of the IPL to spice things up. As per the impact player rule, a team could choose to replace a player by the 14th over of the innings.
The rule was implemented for the first time by Captain Cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He included fast bowler Tushar Deshpande in the playing-11 in place of Ambati Rayudu who was batting. All this happened when the Chennai Super Kings had scored 178 runs for 7 wickets in the first innings and the Gujarat Titans had come out to chase the target of 179 runs. This had changed even before batting.
This allowed Tushar Deshpande’s name to be recorded in the IPL record books forever.
