When the Founder of the Eurovision song contest, Marcel Bezençon, first launched the competition in May 1956, we're pretty sure he never imagined the amazing artists it would host. This includes the likes of Ukrainian drag queen Vera Serduchka or Spanish comedian Rodolfo Chikilicuatre with his reggaeton goofy number 'Bailey el Chikichiki.'
Since its conception, Eurovision has seen thousands of performances from artists all over Europe. With such a large turn-up and a large variety of talent presenting each year, there are bound to be some iconic moments. If you're a Eurovision fan like we are, here are some of the most memorable moments in Eurovision history.
Luxembourg 1980, Sophie and Magaly
Luxembourg's 1989 entry, 'Papa Pingouin' by sisters Sophie and Magaly was truly iconic. From their costumes to their overall performance, they dazzled and made history. Their bright triangular tuxedo suits first caught the crowd's attention before the tall, goofy man waddled around the stage in a penguin suit along with the backup singers. Their performance was not only funny and entertaining, but it also stood out. More so, they weren't afraid to be silly just for the fun of it and that's what made them stand out.
ABBA
No one can stop talking about ABBA's 1974 performance even though it's been years since then. The Swedish group is to date known as one of the greatest Eurovision entries; crowds and viewers loved them so much that they became one of the most famous artists of their time.
Infact, it is believed that ABBA attracted massive international interest, even though Eurovision was already quite famous in Europe. Their performance is still one of the most memorable.
Recent research by Betway Online Casino found that they were the most successful Swedish act in history even though Mans Zelmerlow's 'Heroes' racked up a whopping 365 points in 2015 and was named Sweden's top-performing song.
Lithuania 2006, LT United
Lithuania's LT United were the first contestants who declared themselves winners and made it to the top six in the contest. Their sarcastically pompous number - 'We are the winners', made its way into Eurovision history when crowds associated the catchy lyrics to their playful tune and bizarre dance moves.
Although their costumes were minimalist, they did not dampen the mood of their honky tune and performance as they bounced around the stage with flailing dance moves and crunchy guitars.
Lordi 2006
If you watched the Finish group perform or saw a photo of their performance, you should immediately understand why their performance would be on the list of most memorable.
Where do we even begin? Is it their goblin-themed costumes or their hard-core rock performance? This rock band left half the crowd's mind blown and the other half a little traumatised. Their song, 'Hard Rock, Hallelujah,' led them to victory that year and is still memorable to date.
