Before her, Lara Dutta was adjudged Miss Universe in 2000 when India registered a hattrick in winning international beauty pageants including Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific International. Sushmita Sen, daughter of an Air Force officer, made history in the year 1994 when she became the first Indian woman to win Miss Universe. She was all of 19 at the time of her historic win.(Twitter)
Sushmita won millions of hearts with her answer to the question in final round of Miss Universe 1994. She was asked - What for you is the essence of being a woman?. The actress answered, "Just being a woman is a gift of God that all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, who is a woman. The next win for India came after six years when Lara Dutta became the second Indian beauty to be crowned Miss Universe in 2000. This is the same year when Indian beauties mesmerised the world with both their presence of mind and beauty and won three prestigious beauty titles in all - Miss Universe (Lara Dutta), Miss World (Priyanka Chopra) as well as Miss Asia Pacific International (Dia Mirza).(Twitter)
Lara Dutta, the daughter of a retired wing commander was all of 22 at the time of winning the title. All the contestants in the final round of Miss Universe were asked the same question - "Right now, there is a protest that has been staged outside the stadium posing pageants as an affront to women. Convince them that they are wrong". Lara's answer won many hearts and her the title. She said - "Pageants like Miss Universe gives us young women a platform to foray into the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed forces, be it politics.
