It’s a longstanding custom that, with each new Sony console, comes a brand new PlayStation headset: it occurred on the PS3 with the primary Wireless Stereo Headset, then on the PS4 with the Gold Wireless Stereo Headset, and now lastly on the PS5 with the Sony PlayStation Pulse 3D Stereo Headset.
Like its predecessors, the brand new PS5 Pulse 3D Headset is unquestionably a powerful performer within the sound division, providing detail-rich stereo and encompass sound, however the addition of latest options like 3D Tempest AudioTech assist is what makes this most likely the must-own PS5 headset.
For social and aggressive avid gamers, extras like mic monitoring and particular person level-setting for chat and recreation audio assist set the headset aside out of your customary pair of wired headphones you've laying round, and the mic high quality is pretty good all issues thought-about. It does not damage both that the setup is useless easy and can quickly be accessible in a brand new shade: Midnight Black.
While it’s not with out issues – its 12-hour battery runs out quick, its construct high quality isn’t the very best and the 3D impact does take some tuning to get proper – the Pulse 3D is a rock-solid PS5 headset and one which we’d suggest you choose up if you lastly get your arms on the console.
Price and launch date
The white Sony PlayStation Pulse 3D Wireless Headset launch date was October, 30 2020, virtually a full two weeks forward of the launch of the PS5 launch date November 12, and a Midnight Black model shall be accessible beginning in October 2021. They're appropriate with each the PS5 and PS4, and step as much as substitute the Sony Platinum Wireless Headset for the PS4 that got here out again in 2017.

In phrases of worth, the Sony Pulse 3D Headset is available in at $99 / £89.99 / AU$159, which could sound costly contemplating the value of different third-party headsets, however that’s truly pretty affordable contemplating the entire issues the Pulse 3D brings to the desk.
That mentioned, when you’re in search of some alternate options, you might try the Turtle Beach Recon 200 that’s appropriate with the PS5 and priced at solely $49.99 / £29.99 / AU$77.99, nonetheless you’ll be making a sacrifice within the sound efficiency division and general function set. For now, the PlayStation Pulse appears to supply the very best price-to-performance ratio of any PS5 headset.
Design
While the unique Sony Wireless Headphones matched the cumbersome, jet-black PS3, the brand new Pulse 3D Headset matches the aesthetic of the PS5 completely with a two-tone black-and-white shade scheme. It's modern, too, with an adjustable high strap that completely cradles your head. It’s a balanced look between traditional and house age with out straying too far in both path.
In phrases of weight, the Pulse 3D weighs in at 295 grams, which is about common for a pair of over-ear headphones. The cans themselves home medium-sized 40mm drivers and the clamping pressure of the headphones – i.e. how a lot stress the cups put in your head - is simply sufficient to maintain them on with out them falling off.
Like earlier than, Sony has chosen to make use of a leatherette materials for the earcups that feels mushy and supple and a plastic bridge that feels the slightest bit flimsy. Sure, going for silk and metallic would possibly’ve made them a bit cosier on the ears and sturdier, however the pleather stays comparatively cool and comfy after prolonged use and the plastic, whereas positively not very best, does hold the price of the headset down.
The exterior of the left earcup performs host to the controls: a rocker for recreation and chat audio that may increase both individually; a microphone monitor toggle with the intention to hear your self; a quantity rocker; a mute button and the facility swap. There’s additionally a 3.5mm jack that may connect with any 3.5mm machine utilizing the included cable and a USB-C port for charging.
Because the headset has a 3.5mm jack, you should utilize the headset with out the included dongle and you will nonetheless get to listen to 3D Tempest AudioTech, although that can drain the battery on the controller sooner. That mentioned, it is most likely finest that, when utilizing the headphones with the PS5, it's best to ensure the dongle is plugged in and related as an alternative of connecting the headphones to the controller with the audio cable.
The solely downside with the design is that, realistically, it’s not the form of factor you’d put on exterior of the home. If you’re planning on shopping for a pair of headphones you'll be able to take with you on the go, the PlayStation Pulse 3D Wireless Headset isn’t going to be it.
Performance
Setting up the headset is so simple as plugging the included dongle into one of many PS5’s USB ports and turning the headset on. The console will routinely connect with the headset and direct all audio there as an alternative of the TV’s audio system. You can even plug the dongle right into a PC's USB port if you wish to use it there, however you will not get encompass sound that manner.
Once it is all related, the Pulse 3D Wireless truly sounds good, with stable stereo and simulated encompass sound. Songs on Spotify did not have as a lot element or readability as they did on different conventional headphones, and a few video games like Fall Guys or Genshin Impact did not see a lot of a lift from the headphones, however by and enormous the stereo and simulated encompass expertise was first rate, if not fairly spectacular.

Of course, what you may actually need to purchase the Pulse 3D Wireless for is its compatibility with Sony's new Tempest 3D AudioTech that it is implementing in all its first-party video games that give them a extra reasonable and immersive sound high quality. In follow, utilizing the Pulse 3D with Spider-Man: Miles Morales meant with the ability to hear extra reasonable metropolis sounds, whereas in Sackboy: A Big Adventure, each sound impact had a definite directionality to it.
The record of video games that assist 3D Tempest AudioTech is pretty restricted for the time being - in reality, it is simply Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Astro’s Playroom, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Demon’s Souls - however it's also possible to anticipate assist for Gran Turismo 7, Returnal, Destruction AllStars, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, Resident Evil Village and extra later down the highway.
Unfortunately, not one of the video games we tried with the headphones up to now sounded as immersive as, say, a Dolby Atmos movie because of the restricted nature of the 3D sound, however getting a style of the 3D AudioTech was preferable to not listening to it in any respect.
Over the course of some weeks, we talked to pals on PS5 with the headset and household on Google Meet after we related the headset to our laptop computer. Both mentioned we sounded tremendous, although not crystal-clear, and that it was corresponding to speakerphone. The one added bonus of the Pulse 3D Headset is that it does have built-in mic monitoring, which lets you hear your self if you're speaking. It's a pleasant function to have for first-person shooters the place the motion can generally override the chat audio, and you may make sure you are coming by loud and clear.
In phrases of battery life, Sony claims that the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset ought to final about 12 hours on a single cost, and we discovered that declare to be fairly correct, give or take an hour relying on how loud we listened to music and if we forgot to show them off after we have been carried out utilizing them for the day. Unfortunately, that 12 hours is round three hours lower than comparable headphones from Astro, Razer, Turtle Beach and different headphone makers, however it should not be a deal-breaker until you are somebody who can by no means bear in mind to plug your headphones in on the finish of the day. (Don't fear, we're responsible of it, too.)
Overall, the headset's efficiency was much better than we anticipated, and whereas it is not the primary identify in readability or soundstage, its workman-like efficiency and ease-of-setup plus the assist for 3D Tempest AudioTech needs to be greater than sufficient to maintain most avid gamers comfortable.
