The Academy Awards (Oscars) are given out for technical and artistic merit in the film industry. They are awarded by AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) as international recognition for achievements in cinematography. Many fans and entertainment critics consider them the most significant and prestigious awards in global entertainment. The Oscars always garner a lot of views, from the red carpet pageantry to the Academy Award for Best Picture, which is always presented last. Although many thespians from different backgrounds have won this prestigious award, certain cities have the bragging rights of producing more than others. Below are the cities with the most Oscar winners. Do any of them surprise you?

  • New York City

New York City takes a back seat to no other when it comes to producing the world's most gifted actors of all time. Hundreds of the world's best performers trace their roots to the five boroughs of New York City, so it is no surprise that The City That Never Sleeps has produced the most Oscar winners. Legendary actor Al Pacino, known for his role in classic movies like The Godfather, Scarface, The Irishman, and Sea of Love, is an Oscar winner. Despite his vast experience in the film industry, the East Harlem-born actor has surprisingly picked up just one Oscar.

Pacino's longtime colleague in the movie industry, Robert De Niro, also hails from New York City. The Greenwich Village-born actor won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Godfather Part II and another for Best Actor in 1980 for his impressive performance in Raging Bull. James Cagney, the first actor born in NY to win a Best Actor Oscar, was also born on the Lower East Side of New York. He won the award in 1942, the same year that Harlem-born Teresa Wright won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Mrs Miniver." Mickey Rooney, Barbra Streisand, Christopher Walken and Adrien Brody are also NYC natives who have won Oscars.

  • London

London is famed for top football clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea FC, which are top picks among punters who bet on football. However, the superstars in London are not only footballers, since this famous city has produced world-famous actors that have won several awards, including Oscars. Daniel Kaluuya made history last year by winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 2021 Oscars for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah. The Get Out, and Black Panther superstar became the first non-white Briton to pick up an Oscar in the show's long history. London-born Elizabeth Taylor has also picked up two Academy Awards for her performances in 'Butterfield 8' and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Emma Thompson also has two Academy Awards, while the famous Charlie Chaplin has an honorary Oscar.

  • Los Angeles

Los Angeles is home to the superstars of Hollywood Hills, so it is no surprise that this iconic city has produced a lot of Oscar winners. LA-born actress Angelina Jolie won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2000 for her role in Girl, Interrupted. Leonardo DiCaprio is also from LA and finally won the Best Actor Award for The Revenant in 2016. Jeff Bridges, Sean Penn, and Timothy Hutton are also LA natives who have picked up Oscars.
