New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday mentioned that banning or not banning cryptocurrencies will come subsequently after consultations. In her reply on Union Budget 2023-23 in Rajya Sabha, Ms Sitharaman said, "The government has sovereign right to tax profit made from cryptocurrency transactions, and the decision on banning or not banning will be taken based on feedback from consultations. I'm not doing anything to legalise or ban cryptocurrencies at this stage. We have only taxed the profit emanating from the transactions."The Budget has introduced that the switch of any digital or cryptocurrency asset will probably be taxed at 30 per cent, the best tax band within the nation.In her Budget speech, the Finance Minister had additionally talked about that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will this 12 months introduce a digital rupee, backed by blockchain expertise."Introduction of a central bank digital currency will give a big boost to the digital economy.
