The theme for International Nurses Day 2023 is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Invest in Nursing and respect rights to secure global health”. 

History

International Nurses Day is observed on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who was the founder of modern nursing. She was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy.

The first International Nurses Day was celebrated by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1965.

But in January 1974, the day got international recognition and May 12 was decided to observe as International Nurses Day to honor Florence Nightingale and nurses for their contribution to the society.

Significance & Importance

Often nurses are not given as much importance as doctors, but we cannot forget the contribution of nurses to society. One of the main objectives of International Nurses Day is to raise awareness to understand the work of nurses, encourage more people to opt for this profession in society, and give them the respect they deserve.
