“At this time, there is no indication that any other government departments have been impacted by this incident,” the assertion stated.
Treasury Board spokesperson Alain Belle-Isle declined to remark when requested who may be accountable for the hack, citing an ongoing investigation.
“We are constantly reviewing measures to protect Canadians and our critical infrastructure from electronic threats, hacking, and cyber espionage,” the Canadian authorities assertion stated.
Canada’s alerts intelligence company final week suggested Canadian essential infrastructure operators “to bolster their awareness of and protection against Russian state-sponsored cyber threats,” echoing calls from US and British companies to brace for potential retaliatory cyber actions from Russia in the context of tensions over Ukraine.
It was unclear if there was any connection in anyway between the Canadian public advisory and the hacking incident dealing with the Canadian foreign ministry. Belle-Isle stated Canadian cybersecurity officers commonly subject advisories on hacking threats.
“Given this investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment further on any specific details for operational reasons,” Belle-Isle stated in an e-mail.
