Fast & Furious 9 finally releases in the UK on Thursday, June 24, as Vin Diesel and his crew ride back to the big screen in the franchise’s latest globe-trotting adventure.
So where was Universal Pictures’ F9, the ninth chapter in the Fast & Furious Saga, filmed?
Directed by Justin Lin, the fast-paced on-screen action thunders around the world – from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tbilisi.
In reality, filming Fast & Furious 9 took place on location in London, Edinburgh in Scotland, Thailand, Tbilisi in Georgia, Los Angeles and Hatfield in Hertfordshire, along with Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios.
“No matter how fast you are, no one escapes his past.”
So fasten your seat belts, here are 6 locations where F9: The Fast Saga was filmed on three continents.
Do you see them on the screen?
1. London, England
Production on the ninth Fast Chapter started in the summer of 2019 in London.
While the majority of the filming took place on soundstages, a dedicated UK-based stunt unit filmed the streets of London, crisscrossing the capital’s most notable tourist sites.
Dame Helen Mirren returns to the Fast & Furious franchise as Shaw matriarch ‘Queenie’ in Fast 9 and impresses at a soiree at a luxury jewelery store in London.
Mirren and Vin Diesel filmed the scenes at Boodles, the luxury British jeweler in Mayfair.
Mirren was also allowed to get behind the wheel for the first time in a Fast film.
On screen, Queenie takes Dom Toretto for a spin in a purple Noble M600, through the dark streets of London, past Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and other iconic landmarks.
Vin Diesel posted on Instagram at the time: “End of week 12! Night shots with a legend, Dame Helen Mirren…who is a great driver by the way!”
While filming in the UK, Sung Kang’s return as Han was a closely guarded secret.
Although Kang’s presence in the film is now known at the time of shooting, it posed a number of security concerns for the production to keep his presence in London, let alone on set, a top secret.
During production at F9, actor and producer Vin Diesel posted weekly updates of the set in London, so it was common knowledge that filming for the ninth chapter had begun.
So when Kang arrived in the UK, customs officers questioned him a little too excited about his reason for being in London. From then on, Kang remained shrouded in secrecy during filming.
He even had to leave the set to make sure he wasn’t accidentally captured in the background of videos or photos of the cast’s birthday celebrations, and he had to apologize if the cast went to public restaurants for meals or filmed something for them. social media feeds.
2. Hatfield, Hertfordshire
The lavish tuner party at Otto’s mansion was filmed at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, just north of London, as Vin Diesel’s Instagram videos revealed at the time.
Lord Salisbury’s Jacobean mansion is a regular filming location and has been used for Netflix series Netflix Bridgerton and hit movie Enola Holmes.
The favorite was also largely filmed there.
For F9, producers used the entrance on the north side of the house for the tuner party, with the distinctive Renaissance water feature clearly visible.
Gorgeous women and supercars as slender as they are sexy set the stage for F9’s feast, which is decidedly luxurious and very European amid the meticulously maintained and expansive grounds of the stately home of Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.
3. Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, Hertfordshire
Based on soundstages in Leavesden, production designer Jan Roelfs and his team transformed the unpaved backyard into the lush jungle landscape of Montequinto, a fictional Central American republic.
Among the wreckage of Mr. Nobody searches Dom Toretto, Letty and the team of smoking debris to find clues to Mr. Nobody and Cipher.
Roelfs took to the soundstages and designed the sets for Tokyo’s neon-filled streets, noodle shops and apartment buildings, where Letty and Mia reconnect.
They also created the cavernous underground and unapproved hideout that Mr. Nobody conceived decades ago, which will become a sort of safe house for Dom and his crew, and ultimately the site of emotional reunions of any kind.
Roelfs and his team also designed and built other sets of keys, including Otto’s hangar, his base of operations with Jakob, and Buddy’s garage, where two old friends have a long-awaited heart-to-heart.
4. Edinburgh, Scotland
Filming of F9 also took place in Scotland’s capital in September 2019, with 11 different parts of the city center being used for the filming.
After filming in London, the UK-based unit spent nearly four weeks in and above the streets of Edinburgh, capturing dazzling rooftop action as Dom (Vin Diesel) chases Jakob Toretto (John Cena) while Roman, Tej and Ramsey Otto and his mercenaries rampage through the streets.
The two-part action scene eventually went on to become one of the biggest film production presences in Scotland’s capital.
according to Movie Edinburgh, filming locations included Waterloo Place, George Street, Cockburn Street, Victoria Street, Melville Street and the National Museum of Scotland.
Filming was also done along the Royal Mile, St Giles’ Street and in Parliament Square.
Lin and Vin Diesel, along with Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel and John Cena, joined them for nearly a week to film in some of the historic city’s most iconic locations and cobblestone streets.
Tourists, locals and unsuspecting fans who came across the filming unit could hear the rumble of Dom’s Mid-Engine Charger or catch a glimpse of their favorite actors filming just steps from their tour buses or cafes.
4. Thailand
While Justin Lin oversaw the main unit with the main cast in the UK, second unit director and stunt coordinator Spiro Razatos and veteran Fast second unit stunt coordinator Andy Gill and their crew led the attack in Thailand with the film’s gravity-defying action.
The film’s opening action sequence, set in Central America, was actually filmed by the Second Unit’s team over an eight-week period in various remote areas of southern Thailand.
5. Tbilisi in Georgia
After shooting the sequences in Thailand, the crew left for Eastern Europe and the country of Georgia to film in the capital, Tbilisi.
It was here that the third act chase scene involved the monstrous 14-foot-tall, 26-ton, three-piece armored vehicle called the Armadillo being shot down along the curving, hilly streets of Tbilisi.
It took supervisor Alex King and his department four months to work out the mechanical, electrical and manufacturing requirements to complete two versions of the armadillo and get them ready for shooting in Tbilisi.
6. Los Angeles, California
When filming in London and Tbilisi was finished, cast and crew made one last stop back where it all started in the United States.
Both on the screen and off, in the Fast Movies All Roads Lead Home, and both the main and second units returned to Los Angeles, California to film for the rest of the main photography.
On the final night of filming, Lin, along with Diesel, returned to the streets of East LA, where it all began.
Fast & Furious 9 hits UK cinemas from Thursday 24 June.
