Effective Techniques To Combat Gender Bias In The Workplace

In Australia, women were given the right to vote in 1902. That was over 100 years ago and marked the start of the march toward equality for all genders. Unfortunately, it’s a march that is still continuing today. You only have to look at the news to see the differences in celebrity pay. That’s only one way that businesses can be biased due to your gender.

Fortunately, people are becoming n more aware of the issue. That’s making it easier to speak out and get results. One thing is certain, if you fight for your rights and lose your job because of it, you’ll want to speak to a reputable unfair dismissal employment lawyer. You will have a genuine claim to make.

Of course, it’s better to resolve the issue if possible. That’s why you should discover the most effective techniques to combat gender bias in the workplace.

Make People Aware

As strange as it may seem, sometimes people simply aren’t aware they are being biased. For example, a male worker who leads a meeting and only responds to males asking questions is gender biased. But, they may not be aware they are doing it.

If you notice the issue then you can simply ask your colleague whether they have noticed it. In many cases, they won’t have and will try harder to notice women’s questions and comments in the future.

Of course, sometimes they know it and don’t care.

Take It Higher

Company bosses are much more aware of how damaging negative publicity can be and how easy it can be for any worker to create negative publicity. You can approach the boss and state your concerns, allowing them to deal with the matter internally and quietly.

It’s best to have some proof to back up your complaint, it makes it harder for the boss to ignore it and would make any negative comments more believable.

You’ll need to be prepared as it could cause ripples in the workplace. But, that’s simply part of fighting for equal rights.

Be There For Others

While you are fighting for your own equal rights be aware that others are doing the same. By banding together you’ll become stronger and it’s harder for the company to ignore you. Naturally, you’ll have different skillsets and this can help you to be better heard.

You shouldn’t have to fight for equal rights in the modern workplace but you do and looking out for each other makes it easier.

Choose Your Position

If you’re attending conferences or even staff meetings, make sure you opt for a central seat. The more in the middle you are the harder it is to ignore you and your opinions. Instead of hiding in the background, you are demanding people listen to you and earn their respect. That makes it harder for them to be biased toward you because of your gender.

In short, create your own vision of the person you want to be and portray it to others in the workplace. It will help.
