National selector Trevor Hohns issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “Many players have been hurt in recent weeks. We are lucky to be able to add a player of Marcus’s ability to the team.

He added, ‘Marcus was in very good form for Victoria and along with that he has faced the Indian bowlers in the three-day tour match. At the same time, we are sad that David Warner and Will Pukovski will not play in the first Test match.

He told, ‘Since Will has suffered concussion, we have adopted the traditional approach. We hope that he and David will be fully fit and play with us in the Boxing Day Test.
