They have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup or an AFC Asian Cup, although they have competed for eight SAFF Championships (1984-1992-2011-2015) since its creation in 1993. Following an offer from FIFA head Jules Rimet, India participated in the first FIFA World Cup as an exceptional case with no admission standards in 1950. On July 6, they were defeated 2-1 by France in Paris due to a lack of preparation. They did, however, win gold at the 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi, defeating Iran 1-0.

Bhaichung Bhutia

Bhaichung Bhutia is a retired Indian footballer. He was born in Tinkitam, Sikkim, India on January 2, 1975, and the only Indian to have participated in the Premier League.

Bhaichung Bhutia started his football career with Tata Football Academy (TFA) in 1992 and later went on to play for Kolkata clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, as well as English Premier League team Bury. He was also captain of the India National Team from 2003 to 2007 under head coach Stephen Constantine, during which time they reached their highest FIFA ranking of 98th in 2006 before dropping to 166th in 2007 due to poor performance under his captaincy, prompting him to retire from international football soon after.

Sunil Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri is an Indian Super League footballer who plays for Bengaluru FC. He has played for and led the Indian national team. Having scored  51 goals, he is India's leading goalscorer.

Chhetri began his career at Tata Football Academy prior to joining Mohun Bagan in 1999 for two seasons and six games without scoring a goal. He subsequently went to East Bengal, where he was a regular starter from 2002 to 2007, making over 150 games and scored over 60 goals throughout that time.

He tried out at Charlton Athletic in 2008. Still, he did not sign a contract with them, so he joined Sporting Clube de Portugal on a free transfer, but did not make any appearances for Sporting because of injury issues before returning home, where he signed back with East Bengal, this time as captain, until 2011, when he signed with the Kansas City Wizards in Major League Soccer (MLS).

However, Chhetri spent the most of his time on loan with Danish club Lyngby BK, where he scored 16 goals in 20 matches before returning home when the KC Wizards were disbanded owing to a lack of interest in MLS football games among American spectators.
